BACKGROUND Shewanella spp. are gram-negative facultative anaerobic, oxidase-positive, motile bacilli that are ubiquitous but commonly occur in seawater and can cause opportunistic infection. Reports on the risk factors for Shewanella infection, its severity, antibiotic susceptibility, and prognosis are limited. This report is of a 78-year-old man with alcoholic cirrhosis presenting with bacteremia and empyema due to infection with Shewanella spp. CASE REPORT A 78-year-old man with alcoholic cirrhosis (Child-Pugh B) presented to our emergency room with a high fever. He had eaten raw fish one week prior to admission. Chest computed tomography showed a right unilateral pleural effusion, and he was hospitalized with suspected empyema. Shewanella spp. was detected in the pleural effusion and blood cultures. We initiated piperacillin/tazobactam and vancomycin empirically and switched to ceftriaxone; the effusion was successfully treated using antibiotics and pleural drainage. However, on hospitalization day 53, the patient died of aspiration pneumonia. In our literature review, we extracted 125 reported cases (including our case) and found that men were disproportionately affected (81%); median age was 61.6 (56-75) years; underlying diseases included hepatobiliary disease (33%), malignancy (25%), and cardiac disease (24%); Shewanella spp. infection sites were skin and soft tissue (35%), respiratory system (18%), and hepatobiliary system (11%); and management included antibiotics (100%), drainage (16%), and debridement (16%). The survival rate was 74% with antibiotics alone. CONCLUSIONS Our case highlights that clinicians should recognize Shewanella spp. as a cause of empyema and bacteremia in patients with liver cirrhosis, and that microbiological diagnosis with antibiotic sensitivity testing and treatment should be undertaken urgently to prevent fatal sepsis.

Sialadenitis has rarely been reported in patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM). Our patient was a 22-year-old man who presented with bilateral swelling of the parotid and submandibular glands, a fever, malaise, and splenomegaly. Laboratory tests revealed an increased percentage of atypical lymphocytes in the leukocyte fraction. Serological testing for antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) revealed an acute infection pattern. The patient was diagnosed with sialadenitis associated with IM caused by EBV infection. With symptomatic treatment, the salivary gland swelling completely resolved within a week. This case suggests that EBV-induced IM should be included in the differential diagnosis of diffuse sialadenitis with elevated atypical lymphocyte counts.

Ruxolitinib, a selective inhibitor of Janus kinases, is a standard treatment for intermediate/high-risk myelofibrosis (MF) but is associated with a predisposition to opportunistic infections, especially herpes zoster. However, the incidence and characteristics of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) in these patients remain uncertain. In this report, we present the case of a 59-year-old woman with MF who developed disseminated histoplasmosis after seven months of ruxolitinib use. The patient clinically improved after ten weeks of combined amphotericin B and azole therapy, and ruxolitinib was discontinued. Later, the patient received fedratinib, a relatively JAK2-selective inhibitor, without relapse of histoplasmosis. We also reviewed the literature on published cases of proven IFIs in patients with MF who received ruxolitinib. Including ours, we identified 28 such cases, most commonly due to Cryptococcus species (46%). IFIs were most commonly disseminated (39%), followed by localized lung (21%) infections. Although uncommon, a high index of suspicion for opportunistic IFIs is needed in patients receiving JAK inhibitors. Furthermore, the paucity of data regarding the optimal management of IFIs in patients treated with JAK inhibitors underscore the need for well-designed studies to evaluate the epidemiology, pathobiology, early diagnosis, and multimodal therapy of IFIs in patients with hematological malignancies receiving targeted therapies.

OBJECTIVES: Historically, patients with leukaemia and invasive fusariosis (IF) have experienced poor outcomes in the setting of persistent immunosuppression. Herein, we retrospectively reviewed the incidence, presentation and outcomes of IF that are scarcely studied in contemporary cohorts of leukaemia patients. METHODS: We identified adult leukaemia patients with proven or probable IF at MD Anderson Cancer Center during 2009-21. Independent risk factors for 42 day mortality after IF diagnosis were determined using a multivariable logistic regression model. Combined with historical data, the annual IF incidence density over the past 23 years was estimated using Poisson regression analysis. RESULTS: Among 140 leukaemia patients with IF (114 proven), 118 patients (84%) had relapsed/refractory leukaemia and 124 (89%) had neutropenia at IF diagnosis. One hundred patients (71%) had pulmonary IF, 88 (63%) had disseminated IF and 48 (34%) had fungaemia. Coinfections were common (55%). Eighty-nine patients (64%) had breakthrough IF to mould-active triazoles. Most patients (84%) received combination antifungal therapy. Neutrophil recovery [adjusted OR (aOR), 0.04; 95% CI, 0.01-0.14; P < 0.0001], pulmonary IF (aOR, 3.28; 95% CI, 1.11-9.70; P = 0.032) and high SOFA score (aOR, 1.91 per 1-point increase; 95% CI, 1.47-2.50; P < 0.0001) were independent predictors of 42 day mortality outcomes. From 1998 to 2021, IF incidence density increased significantly at an annual ratio of 1.03 (95% CI, 1.01-1.06; P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: IF is predominantly seen in patients with relapsed/refractory leukaemia and increasingly seen as a breakthrough infection to mould-active triazoles. Despite frequent combination antifungal therapy, high mortality rates have persisted in patients with lasting neutropenia.

RESUMO

We report three cases of Clostridium butyricum bacteremia associated with taking C. butyricum-related probiotics. We performed a literature review and found 11 cases of C. butyricum bacteremia including our cases. Nine cases related to probiotics. We should consider that probiotics may infect clinically unstable patients.

Germline pathogenic variants (PVs) in the gene encoding the GATA2 transcription factor can result in profound reductions of monocytes, dendritic cells, natural killer cells and B cells. GATA2 PVs are associated with an increased risk of myeloid malignancies and a predisposition to nontuberculous mycobacterial and human papillomavirus infections. Additionally, invasive fungal infections (IFIs) have been reported in individuals with GATA2 PVs, even in the absence of myeloid malignancies. In this report, we present the case of a 40-year-old man with Emberger syndrome (GATA2 mutation, recently diagnosed acute myeloid leukaemia [AML] and history of lymphedema with hearing loss) who developed Mucorales sinusitis while receiving his first course of remission induction chemotherapy. Additionally, we review the literature on all published cases of proven IFIs in patients with GATA2 PVs. Clinicians should be aware that patients with GATA2 PVs could be vulnerable to opportunistic IFIs, even in the absence of AML and antineoplastic therapy. Furthermore, the distinctly unusual occurrence of mucormycosis during the first course of induction chemotherapy for AML in our patient indicates that patients with germline GATA2 PVs receiving induction chemotherapy for AML might be at high risk for early onset of IFIs due to aggressive, opportunistic moulds.

Background: In this international multicenter study, we aimed to determine the independent risk factors associated with increased 30 day mortality and the impact of cancer and novel treatment modalities in a large group of patients with and without cancer with COVID-19 from multiple countries. Methods: We retrospectively collected de-identified data on a cohort of patients with and without cancer diagnosed with COVID-19 between January and November 2020 from 16 international centers. Results: We analyzed 3966 COVID-19 confirmed patients, 1115 with cancer and 2851 without cancer patients. Patients with cancer were more likely to be pancytopenic and have a smoking history, pulmonary disorders, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and corticosteroid use in the preceding 2 wk (p≤0.01). In addition, they were more likely to present with higher inflammatory biomarkers (D-dimer, ferritin, and procalcitonin) but were less likely to present with clinical symptoms (p≤0.01). By country-adjusted multivariable logistic regression analyses, cancer was not found to be an independent risk factor for 30 day mortality (p=0.18), whereas lymphopenia was independently associated with increased mortality in all patients and in patients with cancer. Older age (≥65y) was the strongest predictor of 30 day mortality in all patients (OR = 4.47, p<0.0001). Remdesivir was the only therapeutic agent independently associated with decreased 30 day mortality (OR = 0.64, p=0.036). Among patients on low-flow oxygen at admission, patients who received remdesivir had a lower 30 day mortality rate than those who did not (5.9 vs 17.6%; p=0.03). Conclusions: Increased 30 day all-cause mortality from COVID-19 was not independently associated with cancer but was independently associated with lymphopenia often observed in hematolgic malignancy. Remdesivir, particularly in patients with cancer receiving low-flow oxygen, can reduce 30 day all-cause mortality. Funding: National Cancer Institute and National Institutes of Health.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the prevalence and the associated factors of burnout among both healthcare workers (HCWs) and the general working population, which has not yet been unknown, using large-scale, nationwide data. DESIGN: Cross-sectional internet-based study. SETTING: Nationwide internet survey conducted between 8 and 26 February 2021 in Japan. PARTICIPANTS: Workers aged 20-64 years. We classified the workers as HCWs and the general working population. EXPOSURES: Demographic characteristics (age, sex and marital status), socioeconomic status (education, employment and income), health-related, work-related and industry-related factors (smoking, alcohol use, physical and psychiatric comorbidities, working hours, types of healthcare professionals, experience on the COVID-19 frontline and working industries). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Burnout defined as a score of ≥3 points on the Mini-Z Single-Item Burnout Scale. RESULTS: Of the included 12 650 workers, 1087 were HCWs. After inverse probability weighting on data from the 2016 Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions, burnout in HCWs and the general working population was 33.5% (95% CI 29.2% to 38.0%) and 31.0% (95% CI 29.7% to 32.4%), respectively. In the weighted multivariable modified Poisson regression models, working 60 hours or more was associated with burnout in all workers (HCWs: prevalence ratio (PR) 2.52, 95% CI 1.68 to 3.76; general population: PR 1.26, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.48). Widowed/separated compared with married was associated with burnout only among HCWs (PR 1.69, 95% CI 1.16 to 2.47), whereas presence of physical or psychiatric comorbidities was associated with burnout among the general working population (PR 1.14, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.28; and PR 1.65, 95% CI 1.45 to 1.87, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Burnout was prevalent in both HCWs and the general working population in Japan. Both common and specific risk factors were observed. Our findings highlight the need for the general workplace policy and targeted interventions for burnout prevention.

BACKGROUND: Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) caused by Staphylococcus aureus in the postpartum period is a rare but life-threatening disease. We present a case of acute heart failure as the initial presentation of TSS due to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and describe its clinical characteristics with a systematic literature review. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old woman, 8 days after a normal vaginal delivery presented to our hospital with dyspnea and fever. She had jugular venous distension, bilateral leg edema, and erythema. Laboratory examinations revealed elevated NT-pro-BNP level of 3,233 pg/mL. Transthoracic echocardiography showed elevated tricuspid regurgitation peak gradient, with decreased respiratory variability of the inferior vena cava diameter and bilateral pleural effusions. The patient was hospitalized with suspicion of congestive heart failure. MSSA positive for toxic shock syndrome exotoxin-1 was detected in the culture of the perineal incision wound, and we diagnosed TSS caused by MSSA. Intravenous diuretics were administered, along with eventual cefazolin plus clindamycin. After 2 weeks of antimicrobial therapy, the patient showed improvement and was discharged. No recurrence was observed at the 24-month follow-up. CONCLUSION: This is a rare case report of acute heart failure being the initial manifestation of TSS due to MSSA in the postpartum period. Clinicians should consider TSS as a possibility in postpartum patients with acute heart failure. This systematic review provides insights into its clinical features, treatment regimens, and prognosis of TSS by S. aureus in the postpartum period. TSS requires an appropriate, prompt diagnosis, because delayed treatment can be fatal.

Results: We analyzed 3966 COVID-19 confirmed patients, 1115 cancer and 2851 non-cancer patients. Cancer patients were more likely to be pancytopenic, and have a smoking history, pulmonary disorders, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and corticosteroid use in the preceding two weeks (p≤0.01). In addition, they were more likely to present with higher inflammatory biomarkers (D-dimer, ferritin and procalcitonin), but were less likely to present with clinical symptoms (p≤0.01). By multivariable logistic regression analysis, cancer was an independent risk factor for 30-day mortality (OR 1.46; 95% CI 1.03 to 2.07; p=0.035). Older age (≥65 years) was the strongest predictor of 30-day mortality in all patients (OR 4.55; 95% CI 3.34 to6.20; p< 0.0001). Remdesivir was the only therapeutic agent independently associated with decreased 30-day mortality (OR 0.58; CI 0.39-0.88; p=0.009). Among patients on low-flow oxygen at admission, patients who received remdesivir had a lower 30-day mortality rate than those who did not (5.9% vs 17.6%; p=0.03). Conclusions: Cancer is an independent risk factor for increased 30-day all-cause mortality from COVID-19. Remdesivir, particularly in patients receiving low-flow oxygen, can reduce 30-day all-cause mortality. Condensed Abstract: In this large multicenter worldwide study of 4015 patients with COVID-19 that included 1115 patients with cancer, we found that cancer is an independent risk factor for increased 30-day all-cause mortality. Remdesivir is a promising treatment modality to reduce 30-day all-cause mortality.

BACKGROUND: Viridans group streptococci (VGS) are the most common causative organisms of infective endocarditis. Among VGS, the Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) is often associated with abscess formation, and delayed diagnosis leads to increased morbidity and mortality. This study aims to examine the factors associated with SAG bacteremia and develop a predictive scoring method. METHODS: This single-center retrospective case-control study of patients with VGS bacteremia compared the background and clinical characteristics between the SAG and non-SAG groups. The univariate analysis used the χ2 test and t-test. The multivariate analysis was conducted using logistic regression. RESULTS: Out of 161 patients, 95 had SAG and 66 had non-SAG bacteremia. Age >63 years: 2 points (odds ratio [OR] = 3.52, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.64-7.54); solid tumor: 2 points (OR = 4.44, 95% CI: 1.42-6.77); C-reactive protein >7.61 mg/dL: 3 points (OR = 5.40, 95% CI: 2.49-11.72), and white blood cell count >8550/µL: 2 points (OR = 2.76, 95% CI: 1.29-2.91) were found to be independently associated with SAG bacteremia. After totaling the above variables and adding 1 point for diabetes mellitus, the area under the receiver operating curve was 0.81 (95% CI: 0.74-0.88). The sensitivity and specificity were 51% and 88%, respectively, at a cut-off of 6 points. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with VGS bacteremia, a score of 6 points or higher using this method predicts SAG with high specificity.

Burnout among physiotherapists has been reported worldwide during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, no information was found on the prevalence of burnout among physiotherapists in Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic. Physiotherapists directly providing physiotherapy to patients with COVID-19 in the red zone of 487 medical facilities were evaluated for the prevalence of burnout using the Japanese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS). The association between the presence or absence of burnout and the working environment was analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Among the 566 physiotherapists analyzed, 99 (17.5%) satisfied the MBI-GS criteria for burnout. Multivariate analysis showed that burnout was associated with the year of physiotherapy experiences [odds ratio (OR) 0.96, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.93-0.99], feeling slight burden with infection control (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.32-0.87), not feeling too burdened with infection control (OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.06-0.83), establishment of staffing standards for physiotherapy according to the number of beds (OR 1.80, 95% CI 1.09-2.96), and relaxation time (OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.30-0.82). Moreover, the OR increased as the self-improvement time decreased (OR 38.3, 95% CI 6.64-731). In Japan, the prevalence of burnout among physiotherapists during the COVID-19 pandemic was an intermediate value between the prevalence of burnout among physicians and nurses reported in previous studies. This study found the need to establish appropriate staffing standards for physiotherapy and support systems including secure self-improvement time and appropriate training according to physiotherapy experiences and each medical facility.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the mental health of health care workers. This study aimed to investigate the stress factors that cause burnout in Japanese physicians and their coping methods during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We conducted a sequential explanatory mixed-method study to investigate the psychological responses of physicians in the early stages of the pandemic. A cross-sectional, web-based, anonymous survey was conducted among members of the American College of Physicians Japan Chapter to quantitatively investigate the stress factors and prevalence of burnout. An open-ended questionnaire with questions about stress factors and coping methods was additionally administered. The qualitative data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Among the 1173 physicians surveyed, 214 (18.2%) responded. Among the participants, 107 (50.0%) responded "yes" to the question "I feel or have felt very stressed at work during the COVID-19 pandemic," and 68 (31.8%) reported burnout symptoms. Those who reported feeling stress (117 respondents) were asked to select 12 items of the stress factors related to COVID-19. The most significant stress factor related to COVID-19 was "Perceived risk of spreading COVID-19 to family members" (n = 47). Content analysis identified 12 categories for the stress factors and 7 for stress-coping methods corresponding to COVID-19 (Cohen's kappa = 0.84 and 0.95, respectively). Conclusion: Several distinct stressors existed during the COVID-19 pandemic, which might be related to burnout among physicians. Practicing stress-coping strategies, as identified in the present study, may help reduce work-related stress and prevent burnout.

BACKGROUND We report a case of diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) caused by Legionella pneumophila serogroup (SG) 1 and review the existing literature to identify risk factors and determine the prognosis of patients with Legionella pneumonia-associated DAH. CASE REPORT A 44-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital following the presentation of dyspnea for a few days. Chest computed tomography (CT) findings revealed "crazy-paving" pattern in the right upper lobe implicating DAH and consolidation in the lower lobe. Analysis of the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid revealed DAH, with further analyses identifying L. pneumophila SG 1 as the causative agent. The patient was successfully treated with levofloxacin and a red blood cell transfusion and discharged on the 32nd day of hospitalization. A literature review of 6 reported cases (including our case) of Legionella pneumonia-associated DAH revealed that the median age of patients with DAH was 59 years (range, 44-75 years), involving female patients in 4 cases (67%) and the use of immunosuppressive drugs in 2 cases (33%). Three cases were BAL Legionella polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-positive and 4 cases were diagnosed using a urinary Legionella antigen test (one case was simultaneously PCR-positive). These infections were caused by L. pneumophila SG 1 in three cases and SG 3 in one case. Mechanical ventilation was used in 5 cases (83%) and one patient had an unfavorable prognosis. Steroids for DAH were used in 5 cases (83%), and 2 cases responded to this treatment. CONCLUSIONS Our case highlights that clinicians should be aware of Legionella spp. as a cause of DAH in an immunocompetent host with "crazy-paving" pattern on chest CT, and perform a urinary antigen test and BAL PCR for diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is an important community- and hospital-acquired infection. Patients receiving tube feeding often have diarrhoea, and it is still unclear whether the traditional criteria for submitting samples for Clostridioides difficile (CD) testing as determined by the frequency of the diarrhoea apply to these patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study comparing the clinical features of tube-fed inpatients with suspected CDI, with CDI, and those without CDI admitted between 2004 and 2020. Univariate associations were assessed using the chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, or student's t-test, and multivariate analysis was conducted using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Among 805 tube-fed inpatients with and suspected CDI, 163 (20.2%) had CDI and 642 (79.8%) did not. The following seven predictors, independently associated with CDI, were used to develop the SEASON GAP score: male (Sex) (1 point), Emaciation (1 point), days from Admission to testing ≥21 days (2 points), Stool frequency/day ≥5 times (1 point), seasON (summer: 2 points, spring and winter: 1 point), GAstrostomy (2 points), and no prior Proton pump inhibitor use (1 point). In a receiver operating characteristic curve, the area under the curve was 0.77 (95% confidence interval: 0.73-0.80). The optimal cut-off point was 3.5. A score of ≤3 had a sensitivity, specificity, and negative predictive value of 81%, 60%, and 93%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The SEASON GAP score is useful in ruling out CDI in patients with tube feeding, thus reducing unnecessary CD testing and antimicrobial use.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of patients with penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae (PRSP) is complicated because of the relatively poor blood-brain barrier penetration of effective antimicrobials. Our case: A previously healthy 70-year-old woman, a traveler from China to Japan, was admitted to our hospital with fever and loss of consciousness. She has no history of pneumococcal vaccination. She was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis due to penicillin-and third-generation cephalosporin-resistant strains of S. pneumoniae. The patient was successfully treated with a combination therapy of vancomycin (VCM) and levofloxacin (LVFX) and recovered without any neurological sequelae. As the treatment of penicillin-and third-generation cephalosporin-resistant strains of S. pneumoniae meningitis remains unclear, we conducted a review of the reported cases of meningitis caused by penicillin- and cephalosporin-resistant S. pneumoniae. METHOD: We performed a search using the keywords "penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae," "meningitis," and "pneumococcal meningitis". We searched the electronic databases PubMed, Embase, and Ichushi from their inception to March 2020. Subsequently, two authors independently reviewed the resulting database records, retrieved full texts for eligibility assessment, and extracted data from these cases. RESULT: We identified 18 papers describing thirty-five cases of penicillin- and cephalosporin-resistant S. pneumoniae meningitis including our case. The patient's characteristics were; median age: 50 years, men:50%, 85% of cases received combination regimens of antibiotics: Ceftroriaxone (CTRX) plus VCM (20 cases), CTRX plus VCM plus rifampicin (RFP) (two cases), CTRX plus linezolid (one case), fluoroquinolones (two cases), carbapenems (six cases), Thirty-five percent received steroids. Twenty-four percent of patients died. Twenty-six percent of patients complicated neurological sequalae. CONCLUSION: Combination therapy including VCM plus LVFX could be a treatment option.

The risk factors for eosinophilic pneumonia (EP) remain unclear. We investigate the characteristics of patients with daptomycin (DAP)-induced EP and conducted a retrospective observational study. A total of 450 patients aged ≥ 18 years who received DAP (25 DAP with EP, 425 DAP without EP) were included. The median duration from the first DAP administration to EP onset was 18.0 days. Definite, probable, and possible DAP-induced EP were diagnosed in 0, 9, and 16 patients, respectively. The median age (DAP with EP, 72.0 years; DAP without EP, 64.0 years), DAP dosage/body weight (BW) (9.00 vs. 7.50 mg/kg), blood eosinophil count (cells/µL) (419 vs. 96), and the percentage of hemodialyzed patients (40.0% vs. 13.4%) were significantly higher in patients with EP than in patients without EP in the univariate analysis. In separate multivariate logistic regression analyses, age (odds ratio (OR), 1.03; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.00-1.05), DAP dosage/BW (OR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.25-2.07), and hemodialysis (OR, 4.42; 95% CI, 1.86-10.5) were significantly associated with DAP-induced EP. Clinicians may need to consider the potential factors associated with EP, especially in older patients, patients on hemodialysis, or patients who receive > 9.00 mg/kg of DAP.

OBJECTIVES: The prolonged effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to have a serious impact on healthcare workers. We described and compared the experiences of healthcare workers in Japan during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic from March to May 2020, and during the lull from June to July 2020. DESIGN: In this qualitative study, we used a web-based survey to obtain comments from healthcare workers about their experiences during the pandemic, and explored these using inductive content analysis. SETTING: A tertiary emergency hospital in Tokyo, in April and July 2020. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were staff in the hospital, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, radiological technicians and laboratory medical technicians. Many, but not all, had directly cared for patients with COVID-19. RESULTS: In total, 102 participants in the first survey and 154 in the second survey provided open-ended comments. Three themes were extracted: concerns, requests and gratitude. There were four subthemes under concerns: the hospital infection control system, fear of spreading infection to others, uncertainty about when the pandemic would end and being treated as a source of infection. There were 53 requests in the first survey and 106 in the second survey. These requests were divided into seven subthemes: compensation, staffing, information, facilities, leave time, PCR tests and equitable treatment. The theme on gratitude had two subthemes: information and emotional support, and material support. The fears and desires of healthcare workers included two types of uncertainty-related concerns, and requests were very different across the two surveys. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to apply a balance of information to help staff adjust to their new work environment, as well as support to minimise the burden of infection and impact on their families.
